about

El Grupo Mijez was formed in the state of Mexico in 1992 by founders Jesús and Miguel Chávez Torres, who are brothers of Oaxacan origin. The group began to play the style of music that was popular at the time, both in radio rotation and in sonideros’ record selections: cumbia sonidera, one of the rhythms that has influenced the group for more than thirty years.

El Grupo Mijez’s lineup is familial by nature, and is composed of Jesús, Gonzalo, Daniel, Luis, Miguel Jr., Carlos, Alejandro, Miguel and Jesús Chávez Torres– the latter being the arranger and director of the group.

El Grupo Mijez recorded their first production, entitled “Con Fuego,” with the Orfeón record label. This release was followed by a series of countless records with different record companies, including Universal Music, Discos Ciudad, and Discos “El Papi.” At the current moment, El Grupo Mijez is self-managed.

El Grupo Mijez was the first cumbia group that sang “las Mañanitas” to the Virgin of Guadalupe with the sonidero touch that characterizes the group. Not only that, they have also adapted “Padre Nuestro” and “Virgen Serena y dulce” to the cumbia rhythm, even singing the songs in religious mass services. The group also highlights their ongoing relationships with important sonideros: Sonido Condor, Sonido Fantasma, Sonida La Conga, and Sonido Sumurái, among others.

Between 2008 and 2011, El Grupo Mijez recorded more than 500 songs, and “El llanto de los luceros” and “La cumbia de la nalgoncita” are some of the most requested songs in the cumbia sonidera world. The group has also recorded in the style of la ranchera, la charanga, and la música romántica. The band understands well how to integrate diverse rhythms, and how to offer a high quality musical show for audiences throughout different parts of Mexico and the United States.

In 2009, El Grupo Mijez recorded various cumbia records: “La cumbia Sampuesana,” “La gaita de los clarinetes,” and “La cumbia de la plaza de toros.” The songs “Cumbia del organito” and “Cumbia de los ovnis” have been carefully selected by the record label Talacha to be pressed as a 7” vinyl record. We are certain that vinyl fans will want to have this pressing in their collections, and that the sonideros will want to mix this record on their sound systems.
